Lincoln Wheelers Cyclo Cross Report
(Written by Phil Galpin)
Another popular course awaited the Bourne Wheelers cyclo-cross team at the Lincoln Wheelers event this Sunday. Set in the grounds of the Lincolnshire Police headquarters at Nettleham, this course is mostly rideable on mown grass and fast with some challenging technical sections.
Robert Ward turned out a fantastic result overturning Marc Gee on the last lap to finish second in the youth race, although disappointed not to have beaten the winner Jake Norton from Spalding, whom he had beaten on a previous occasion. Also riding for Bourne were Jessica Woodworth and Kelsey Beaton who came in 10th and 13th. There were 15 finishers from a smaller field than normal. In the under 12 category, Max Poole from Lincsquad continued his dominance, and again Alex Galpin from Bourne finished well up in 7th, while his brother Dan rode really well on a course he enjoys a lot and climbed to 11th this week. Harry Garfield completed the Bourne contingent coming in 17th place. There were 30 finshers.
In the senior event Mark Cotton from Ellsmore Factory Racing claimed first place. The first Bourne rider was Bart Kieres in a very credible 6th place. Phil Galpin benefitted from being gridded at the start and managed his highest position of the year in 32nd. Steve Collins rode well to finish in 54th place. There were 74 finshers in this event.
Woodhall Spa Cyclo Cross Report
(Written by Phil Galpin)
Bourne Wheelers cyclo-cross team were out in force again at the Boston Wheelers event in Woodhall Spa. The course here in a pine woodland with a large amount of single track and almost all rideable with an absence of cowpats makes this race one of the most popular in the league. The event is always on remembrance Sunday and always with a minutes silence at the start of the Senior race.
There were some new faces in the Bourne contingent and the type of course makes it a good one to start on. In the youth race the girls Jess Woodworth and Kelsey Benton finished 17th and 24th respectively where 27 finished. Max Williamson from the Lincsquad team won. In the U12 race there were no less than 6 entrants, which is a grand tribute to the efforts of Mark at the Go-ride sessions. Max Poole won from 34 finishers. Alex Galpin led the team home in 7th place beating some noteable opposition from the bigger Lincoln clubs. Next were Dan Galpin and Harry Garfield who had a good race long battle to finish 17th and 18th respectively. Charley Woodworth came in 24th and newcomers Penelope Lindsell and her brother Edward were 25th and 26th. When they finish and say they really enjoyed it you can be hopefull they’ll be out again soon.
In the senior event a field of 130 riders started which made for a frustrating first lap before the competitors settled into their rythmn. The familiar stationary queue at the first pinch point was a strange moment to endure in what is meant to be a race. Professional Graham Briggs, now riding for Rapha Condor, has competed in this race before and duly showed his class with a convincing victory over the best Lincolnshire could offer. Bourne had 5 riders out and first home was Bart Kieres in 15th place. Premek was 39th and Phil Galpin back in 67th with Steve Collins not far behind in 72nd. Mark Wren completed his first and hopefully not last cyclo-cross event in 97th place.

Intro Ride for potential new members
Bourne Wheelers Cycling Club is holding an introductory club run this coming Sunday to give anyone interested in finding out more about the club the chance to come out and enjoy a ride with other club members
There is no pressure to join and we will have tried to come up with two ride options to suit all abilities.
PLEASE note: the ride is for over 18’s, though anyone 16+ can ride if they have a parent or guardian with them – the club youth section ride on a Saturday morning – please use the contact us form for more details.
The ride details are provided below – if you intend to join us, please can you us know via the contact us form, just so we are expecting you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line.
- Date: Sunday 3rd November
- Location: We meet in the car park behind the post office in Bourne (if you’re not sure where that is, let me know)
- Time: 9am (for 9.10am depart – please be on time, as we’ll have a short briefing before we set off!)
- Distance: c37 miles or c52miles
- Difficulty: undulating, but not too many hills!
- Speed: depends on the weather and the ability of the group – but no one will get left behind, we may get strung out on the hills, but each group will ride and get home together
- What to bring: something to drink (you’ll be out for 2.5 to 3.5 hours, so we’d recommend 2 x 500ml water bottles); spare inner tube (if you can); wet weather clothing and lights (if the weather looks bad); some money for the cafe stop (£2-3) – we also strongly recommend for your own safety that you ride with a helmet.
- The Plan: The tentative plan (weather permitting!) is that we will all ride out to Wymondham Windmill (c18 miles) for a cafe stop.
The route out will take us from Bourne to Little Bytham, South Witham and then on to Wymondham.
After a short stop, the shorter route riders will make their way back to Bourne with 2-3 club members.
Those preferring to try a longer route, will head out from the cafe stop to Oakham and the back to Bourne via Cottesmore, Greetham, Castle Bytham, Edenham, Hanthorpe and Morton. There are plenty of opportunities to shorten the route if needed, but it will be approximately 52 miles.

Cat & Fiddle
Message from Mike Parkins:
The Cat & Fiddle ride takes place this year on Sun 6th Oct 6th.
We leave Bourne around 6.30 am, bikes in my van and riders sharing car seats. We have had a small presence last 5 years, but would like more to join us.
The ride starts from Stoke any time from 8.00 am and goes Stoke-Macclesfield-Cat & Fiddle-Buxton-Leek-Stoke. 55 miles, best club time is Steve Clelland’s 3hrs 04mins.
You can enter in advance or on the day, £20, it all goes to charity. It always rains, it’s always windy, the descents are scarey but it’s mostly uphill anyway 🙂 Good points are hundreds of riders, so you are never alone and the superb buffet afterwards at no extra cost.
Let me or Steve know if you are joining us and where you want picking up from 🙂

Froome wins tour
Better late than never eh? 🙂
Just in case you’ve been visiting the dark side of the moon for the past week, Chris Froome secured victory in this years Tour de France on Sunday evening. The British rider pretty much dominated the race and was a deserving winner. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/23399875

Jens Voigt
The Tour de France 2013 starts this Saturday and here’s a little inspirational tale about cycling legend and hardman Jens Voigt who, at 41, starts his 17th Tour this weekend.
In the 2010 Tour, Voigt survived a scare on the mountainous stage 16, where he crashed heavily on the descent of the Col de Peyresourde, destroying his bike. After getting back up, he realized that all the team cars had passed and that he would not be handed a new bike. Desperate, he borrowed a bike much too small for him, from a children group’s car which was following the race. He rode on it for about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) before reaching a policeman who had another bicycle which had been left for him by his team.
Facts about Jens Voigt
- He has such good bike handling skills he can ride in the rain without getting wet.
-
If Jens Voigt was a planet, he’d be the World of Hurt
Peterborough CC Sportive (14th July)

Hereward League Update
With just one round of this years Hereward League competition remaining, Bourne Wheelers have five riders in the top 10. Sian Botteley leads the way in 2nd, closely followed by her brother Adam Botteley in 3rd. Jamie Nation (4th), Steve Collins (5th) and Robbie Ward (8th) are also in the running for top 5 places.
With the best three results from four rounds to count, the overall win appears to have gone to Fenland Clarion, but there is still plenty to ride for with as many as 12 Bourne Wheelers still able to get a top 5 finish.
In the scratch league, Andy Barnard is 4th, Sian Botteley 6th, Robbie Ward 7th and Steve Collins 9th.
The final round is hosted by Spalding CC on the 10th July.

ANNUAL PRIZE PRESENTATION
Although an email has been sent out, I have just decided to post the relevant info on the website.
The Presentation evening will take place on Friday 18th January at the “Loft” above the Nags Head in Bourne town centre.
Cost will be £10, Guest speaker will be former Commonwealth Games rider Jeff Snodin.
The evening will take on the same format as last year, with a Quiz, Buffet, Presentation of Awards (including some novelty and new awards) and then a disco.
If you can email me at botteley@aol.com if you intend to come.
