The club run will leave the PO car park as usual @ 9:30am on Sunday 1st Jan, for anyone who is able to get up.
WITH just over two weeks to go until the National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Ipswich, Bourne’s top two cross riders for the season, Tim James and Sian Botteley are coming into top form.
Both raced twice at the weekend, firstly at Sherwood Forest on the Saturday, in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire League, and then at Doncaster with the rest of their clubmates in the final round of the Lincolnshire League on Sunday.
At Sherwood in a field of 60 riders, Tim finished sixth overall and the third U14, which was a great performance in such a competitive race.
Sian, having been in third position early in the race, was taken out by another rider, causing her to drop right to the back of the field. Despite the setback, She battled through the field to eventually finish in 17th and the second-placed girl.
At Doncaster it was Tim’s turn for misfortune, crashing on the ice while leading the race.
After taking a bit of time to get himself sorted and his bike checked over, he chased back through the field to finish fifth and the first U14 to cross the finish line.
Sian meanwhile had her best race of the year, never far from the leaders to record a fine third place and first girl, retaining her unbeaten record in the Lincs League.
Even more impressively, she was the first girl in recent years to win a place on the podium at a Lincolnshire League event.
Backing Tim and Sian up were Campbell Pollock who placed seventh, just ahead of an improving Aaron Bateman in eighth, with Maddie Gammons moving up the rankings to take 12th place.
In the senior event, Bart Kieres, was the highest-placed Bourne rider in 16th.
James Gelsthorpe, riding his first ever cross race finished in a respectable 27th place.
The results reflect an excellent year for the Bourne club and rider Mark Botteley said: “The wheelers have had a great year. Next year promises to be even better.”
Further to Gerald’s email I think a few people have entered this event now (leave a comment if you want to let people know your doing it and which route) .
As yet it hasn’t sold out so if you fancy entering there is still time.
Our Reliability Ride in February will be the perfect warm up for this event.
This weekend in the woods saw another good turnout from the Bullets. 8 children and 2 dads set off in search of some mud in the younger riders group. After riding some of the cyclo-cross event route they came round to the mushrooms and did a couple of laps of them. James Gelsthorpe joined in as he was out on his new cross bike, and they also met up with Gerald. Having completed 2 laps of Dianas glade they returned to 5 ways to meet up with the older riders. In the older riders group there were 6 and they definitely found some mud as they had ventured out towards the ponds and beyond. A short handicapped relay race with 7 teams of 2 was the finale, but there was only glory to be had as a trophy, and no chocolate. It was another good hours fun riding bikes. Same again next month, please.
Bourne Wheelers and Bourne Bullets meet on the first Saturday of the month for an hours ride round the woods. All abilities welcome.
Last week saw the Bourne Bullets weekly coaching sessions come to an end for the year, although the monthly group ride sessions around Bourne Woods will continue throughout the year.
The youth section has 40 members, an increase on last years membership and have held 23 coaching sessions throughout the year, with an average of 23 riders taking part in each session.
Throughout the year the Bullets have fielded teams in local and National events with a high level of success. The team have dominated the Lincs Cyclo-Cross League again this year, not only in results but in the number of competitors, and having participated in road racing events for the first time this year, have also placed highly in the local events, with their top road rider of the year, Sian Botteley, gaining selection for the East Midlands Divivion in the Inter Regional Championships in Scotland.
Time trialling wise, the older riders have raced regularly in the club 10 series, beating the senior riders in the club on many occassions, with them all recording one personnel best after another. The team will be looking to continue their progress this coming year when they aim to field a team in the National School 10 mile event.
The prize winners for the year were Tim James (Points), Adam Botteley (Attendance Trophy), Dan Burton (Quickest rider over the National Skills Course) and Maddie Gammons (Brewster Cup, for the most improved rider)
