The UK’s first ever closed road TT and Grand Fondo for amateur riders came to Cambridgeshire at the weekend.
Based around the Peterborough Arena at the Showground, the event saw a 16 mile Time Trial on the Saturday, followed by a 78 mile Grand Fondo road race on the Sunday.
In the time trial, an incredible 533 riders took to the start throughout a warm and sunny, but VERY windy day. Bourne Wheelers were represented by Tom Comben, Tony Gilbert and Antony Gough.
Tom came home a fantastic 103rd overall, good enough to finish in 28th place in his age group and qualify for the UCI World Amateur TT Championships in Denmark in September! 🙂
Tony finished in 310th overall (32nd in his age group) whilst Antony’s race ended all too briefly after puncturing in the first mile.
On the Saturday several Bourne Wheelers joined over 5,000 other riders as they took part in the Grand Fondo event – Jamie Nation and Michael Nation both look set to join Tom in Denmark after qualifying for the UCI World Amateur Road Race Championships in their respective age groups. Nigel Thompson had a great ride averaging over 20mph and finishing comfortably inside the top half of all finishers in this first ride representing the club. Antony Gough’s miserable weekend continued as he crashed out after 12 miles whilst in the leading 300 riders.
Look forward to next year’s event and hope to see ALOT more Wheelers taking part 🙂
