(Report by Mark Botteley)
Last weekend saw the clubs top youths travelling up to Sunderland for the first round in the National Youth Circuit Series. All five youths who competed raced exceptionally well.
Three of the clubs new recruits were all racing in their first races at this level and it was 12 year old Molly Peel who secured the highest finish for the Wheelers with 7th place in the under 12 girls race. Backing her up really well was Emily Richards in 13th, while Bryn Richards put in an excellent performance in the under 12 boys race to place 14th.
In the under 16 girls race, established star rider Maddie Gammons was looking to carry on her excellent string of results from the winter. Backed up by first year under 16 Jessica Woodworth, the club have two very talented riders and will be a force to be reckoned with Nationally this year. As usual Maddie rode an aggressive race. When a dangerous move went early in the race, she countered but unfortunately for Maddie the gap was just to big to close and the bunch caught her, just before she got upto the leader, leaving her with no time to recover.
Eventually she finished in 36th place out of the 65 starters. Jess had an excellent race always showing herself near the front and she finished 21st, her highest ever placing at this level.
