(Report by Mark Botteley)
This weekend sees the opening races of the 2015 road season. The Bourne Wheelers riders are spread between two locations, with most at Milton Keynes while a few make the journey up to York.
Its been a busy off season for the club with Maddie Gammons and Tim James excelling at the winter element of the sport that is cyclo-cross. Whilst the duo have been flying the flag for the club at National level, the rest of the club have been training hard and this weekend should give the clubs riders an idea of where their form is at.
The clubs strongest age group this year should be the junior boys and U16 girls. With Tim James and Robbie Ward moving up from the youth catergory to juniors they should both be very competitive and will hope to be featuring in National Series races, while National cyclo cross series champion Maddie Gammons will be joined by Jess Woodworth and Georgia Bullard (transferred over from Fenland Clarion), to make up what should be the strongest girls team in the East Midlands.
The U12 catergory should also be very strong with a trio of riders joining the club from Spalding CC. Molly Peel, Bryn and Emily Richards dominated the Lincs league cyclo-cross league and will hope to carry this form with them in their new team colours on the road and track this year. The trio will be a welcome addition to what was already a strong team with Alex and Dan Galpin, Harry Garfield, Edward and Penny Linsdell and Charley Woodworth.
The only section of the club that will potentially struggle this year will be the senior men, where the loss of Jason Burrill to the Peterborough Road Team, will leave the club a little short, although with Tim and Robbie able to ride with established seniors Mark Botteley, Bart Kieres and Prez Janakowski, the club will hope to still get some top performances.
The clubs time trial season doesn’t begin until April. Reigning club champion Tom Comben again will take all the beating in the season long running club 10 league. This year the club are promoting 4 midweek, womens only 5 mile time trial events. These should hopefully be well supported, with any women allowed to enter.
The club are also organising a road race as part of the East Midlands Road Race League on the 5th April. This will also include a womens only race which will double up as the East Midlands and Central Region Championships for women. On the 26th July, the club will organise their annual circuit races at a new venue, PFI Karting near Grantham.
The clubs annual sportive again is to be held in early September on the 6th. Course details are yet to be confirmed, but will be released shortly.
