Sleaford Open 10TT 7th April

By now you may have been perusing your 2012 CTT Handbook and planning your season ahead. If not the full Calendar is up on the CTT website. Hopefully the Sleaford Wheelers (Charity) 10 mile Time Trial on Easter Saturday will be included in your programme of events to ride.
Last year over £900 was raised from this popular event for the Sleaford Wheelers chosen Charity – Cancer Research UK. It is to be hoped that we can be as successful again in 2012.
Course C10/10 is a single carriageway slightly rolling course, with, in the main, a decent surface. It is entirely on the A15 from just below Quarrington with a RAB turn at Osbournby A15/A52. Course record was set in 2010 by Jim Coleman in a most impressive time of 20 minutes 54 seconds.
Seasonal prizes for this event will be donated, as will those for the after event Raffle.. After necessary expenses are deducted, all surplus monies from the entry fees, donations, tea bar and raffle will be passed on to Cancer Research UK.

Help for Heros Sportive 1st April

This will take place from Marholm Village Hall on Sunday 1st April. Distances of 90 miles, 70 miles or 50 miles. Cost is just £10 and is ALL for a good cause. See www.peterborough5x5challenge.org for further details. Entry online. The organisers are local club cyclists and runners but are organising it with Help for Heroes in an attempt to raise £10,000 over the year. Great if we could get a load of Bourne Wheelers doing it.

Cyclocross Racing Report

Bournes top youth cyclo cross rider Tim James finished his cross season off in style with his 2 best performances of the year.
Firstly in the final counting round of the National Trophy Series at Shrewsbury, he raced to his best placing of 4th in the series, which lifted him upto a highly respectable 7th overall in the under 14 catergory.
He followed this up with a tremendous ride at Bardney in the final Lincs league event, where he dominated from the start to record his 2nd victory of the year in the league by over 80 seconds in the 30 minute race.Backing Tim up in 3rd place for the 2nd successive race in the league was Sian Botteley who in so doing, managed to keep her 100% record in the girls category.

Not to be out done by her 2 older team mates was Maddie Gammons who picked up the 1st prize on handicap as well as placing 2nd girl and 8th overall in the race, to go along with victory in the Lincs League and Lincs Championship for the girls under 14 catergory. In only her first season at the sport, this is a remarkable achievement and indicates a very bright future for the 12 year old who will still be racing in this catergory next year
Also racing strongly at the weekend was Aaron Bateman who finished just behind Maddie in 9th, while Bournes other trio of riders Joe Collins, Dan Burton and Adam Botteley all rode well.

In the senior event, Bourne for once fielded more than the ususal solo rider, and some of the youths magic must of rubbed off on them as Joe’s dad, Steve took victory on handicap, whilst Mark Botteley continued his good form from the National Cross Champs a fortnight ago with a solid 8th place overall, with Bournes other rider Bart Kieres just missing out on a top 10 place

Cyclocross National Championships 2012 Report

James Gelsthorpe was the pick of the Bourne Wheeler riders that contested the various National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Chantry Park, Ipswich last weekend.

Racing in the senior event at the end of the 2 days of racing, up against the very best riders in the country, James put in a fantastic performance to place 48th overall in only his 2nd ever cross race. Despite a viscious pace over the extremely technical course, James stuck to his gameplan and despite starting right at the back of the 90 rider field, he picked riders off consistently throughout the hour long race. Club coach Mark Botteley said “A top 50 performance was a great achievement bearing in mind his inexperience at the discipline and one can only wonder how much higher up the field James would of finished if he’d had a full season at the sport!”

On the Saturday it was the youth and Veterans who kicked off the championships. First up were Tim James and Maddie Gammons. Both rode incredibly well, with Tim coming in 9th in the under 14 boys, while Maddie placed 10th in the under 14 girls.
Next up was Sian Botteley in the under 16 girls race. Despite her worse start of the season which saw her drop right to the back of the 21 rider field, Sian surged through the field to eventually finish a creditable 11th.

Last of the Bourne riders to compete was Mark Botteley in the Vets race. Despite being seeded 85th out of the 100 starters, and like James right at the back of the field as they set off, Mark surged through the field, overtaking riders all the way through the 40 minute race. in the end Mark placed 32nd, 25 places higher than last year

Peterborough CC Sportive Sunday 8th July

As far as I am aware at least 4 guys from Bourne Wheelers have entered this event.

Entries are now open for this years Peterborough Cycling Club Sportive, to be held on Sunday 8th July.

There are 300 spaces available, an increase over last years 200 but I am sure this event will sell out so get your entries in ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Entry fee is only £12 and some of this will be going to the Peterborough Cycling Club’s Youth Development Fund.

Route will be similar to last years but not exactly the same, we hope to see you there.

Half term coached road bike training (juniors)

I’ve noticed British Cycling have two sessions of coached road bike training ‘locally’ at Peterborough 13th Feb and Lincoln 13th and 14th Feb. Looks interesting and thought others might be interested as well. See the British Cycling website for details.
